Over Thirty – Bethan Ash Exhibition of Art Quilts at Oriel Lliw, Pontardawe Arts Centre
Hi Swansea Festival of Stitch Supporters Well there is nothing like the imminent dismantling of your desk and disconnection of your PC (to facilitate Bank Holiday painting and decorating), to focus the mind! I wanted to share my pictures of Bethan Ash’s exhibition of art quilts at Oriel Lliw at Pontardawe Arts Centre. The exhibition is on until the 18th of September so there is still plenty of time to go and view these wonderful quilts. ‘Over Thirty’ refers to Bethan’s involvement in creative textiles for over 30 years. Bethan has been very active in the development of creative textiles and has exhibited all over the world. This was my first opportunity to view Bethan’s work and I loved the vibrancy of the colours and the use of shapes. There were big pieces and smaller ones which could be grouped or worked as stand-alone pieces. The quilts had very quirky titles, Bethan’s great sense of humour showing through, and covered a wide range of subjects. I took lots of photos at the Private View, and it was great to see such a large turn-out for the opening. I’ve also taken some close-ups of the quilts to show how they have been constructed. It’s the colour combinations, shapes and text which fill this exhibition with liveliness. It’s an exhibition to make you smile and feel a little bit intoxicated with all that colour! I will be doing a more in-depth piece on Bethan later this year. I’m planning a series of interviews with prominent creative textile artists in the Swansea Bay area in the lead up to the Swansea Festival of Stitch 2018, less than a year to go now! Enjoy the Bank Holiday and I’ll be back on the blog soon. Fiona
