Using a drum carder for blending colours and creating effects, we will be making fine “pre-felts” (half felted pieces) using dyed silk chiffon. We will work in a free and uninhibited way using layering to create a fine, abstract or semi-abstract small (cushion sized) felted ‘collage’ that incorporates wool, silk, linen and other fibres. Your works will be inspired by the work of an artist, photographer or children’s book illustrator, perhaps relating to the sea.
This workshop will go beyond just techniques to show you ways of working with a source and developing your work further. By. trying to convey an impression/feeling through focusing on layers, colour/tone combinations and composition. I will bring source material - or you can bring your own.
Some materials will be supplied but you will need to bring the following -
Some interesting, challenging images for inspiration from an artist or children’s book illustrator. (doesn’t have to be just one). Look for images that create feeling or use colours/layers/shapes in an interesting way (I will also bring source material as well so need to worry if you haven’t found anything); Medium sized old towel; scissors I will provide all other equipment for beginners.
For those who have done felting before please bring:
Olive oil soap, plastic bottle/sprayer/jug etc; A piece of old sheet or fine non slip matting or fine bubble wrap about 80cm x 100cm to work on. Smaller bits (about 60cm x 50cm) for making pre-felts. Range of colours/shades of tops/sliver.
(I will supply a range of coloured wool tops as well) Other interesting fibres if you have them. Old bits of wool felt left over from other work or any pre-felts you have collected.
