MASTERCLASS ARTIST TUTOR
I am a textile artist and sewing tutor based in the Victorian town of Penarth.
I’ve become fascinated by the past as a subject and have recently completed a collection of stitched pictures from historic photographs of shops and scenes of Victorian and Edwardian Penarth. These are currently being exhibited and will be on show in the Swansea museum on August 18th and 19th
One of the pictures in this collection is of our old haberdashery shop in Glebe Street as it was in 1911
I begin with old photographs or my own sketches/watercolours and set about interpreting them using a combination of collage applique, free-motion and hand embroidery techniques.
I like each piece to tell a story about the people and events included in the subject material and if possible like to include some pieces of vintage fabric or crochet lace.
Sometimes my work is unashamedly nostalgic but always has heart!
Currently I’m focussing on a new collection with the subject being my own family’s 70’s photographs. I’ve just finished a piece based on a photograph taken whilst on holiday in Cornwall.
Typically this has a story to tell.
