MASTERCLASS ARTIST TUTOR
GEORGINA NEWSON www.marchesbookartsgroup.co.uk
I work in fabric because it is a part of my lineage.
I was taught to knit and to sew by my mother, and making has been a part of my life since I was a very small child. I sew because I have always sewn, such that fabric is part of my story and has become a tool for communication, whether it is the communication of love in the clothing I make for my family, or in other feelings, ideas and meanings expressed through art.
I make quilts which straddle many aspects of my life.
I make books because I want to repay my debt to the writers, artists and bookbinders who have so enhanced my life. In my work, I strive to communicate as my best possible self, a self who is honest and thorough, and a self who both acknowledges what is beautiful in the world and seeks to share that joy, and who rejects what is awry in human behaviour and seeks ways of change. I like to create complex surfaces with depth and intrigue, and to embellish and enhance with beads and threads which reflect my Magpie yearnings. .
