Exhibition Trail Around Swansea and to Mumbles Pier 10th – 24th August
Swansea Festival of Stitch - Exhibition Trail around Swansea and to Mumbles Pier 10th – 24th August
The actual dates of each exhibition may vary please check list at end of section.
You can stroll along the Promenade to the Civic Centre where you will find the Wednesday Stitchers exhibition, their work promises to be a feast for the eyes. In some of our exhibition venues there are cafes, giving time to stop, chat, reflect and in The Waterfront Museum of Wales enjoy the sights of the Marina and in the Civic Centre look out towards Swansea Bay.
Coming into Swansea you will see Swansea Museum, the first of our exhibition venues. Outside the building are the beginnings of Festival celebrations with bollards dressed in fanciful sea creature coverings, made by the children from schools in and around Swansea. Inside the Museum you will find the Cwilt Cymru exhibition in the Lecture Theatre showing Art quilts created by artists living in all parts of the country but united by their Welsh connections, www.cwiltcymru.wordpress.com/
Contex Art will be showing their exhibition ‘Shorelines’ in the Long Corridor Gallery; this group was established in 2000 and has 10 local members
Across the way, down Pier Street, the Environment Centre will be hosting work from two local textile artists, Ruth Norbury and Haf Weighton. Haf, whose work has recently been in the Saatchi Gallery in London will be bringing her seashore inspired work to Swansea www.hafanhaf.com
Ruth is a keen environmentalist and aware of the issues that beset our planet including the abuse of animals and her beliefs and values are visible in her work
Both will be displaying work to inspire and challenge.
A short walk to the Colonnade within National Waterfront Museum of Wales will bring you to the Swansea Quilters exhibition https://www.facebook.com/Swansea-Quilters-518790211605855/ with work from the Baywood Quilters on the windows in the corridor. This will be an absolute must for quilting enthusiasts.
Your next port of call could be the Grand Theatre, here you will find two floors of textile exhibitions; on the first floor and second floors will be a colourful, vibrant exhibition from Itchyfingers Textile Group
In the White Room at the Grand, their sister group Stitches Coven, will display a quirky and fascinating exhibition for you to see.
Both of these groups have earned a reputation for presenting a high standard of textile art, pieces of which grace many homes across the principality.
Perhaps now heading towards the centre of town your next stop could be The Dragon Hotel. This is a new venue to the Festival and we are proud to present two exhibitions here with work from the textile group Naturally Sew and artist Natasha Morgan, (https://www.etsy.com/people/NatashaMorgan) exhibiting in the foyer of the Hotel. Natasha’s dolls are utterly different, look at the detail and exquisite needlework and know that every part of these dolls have been designed and hand worked by Natasha. Naturally Sew will have two large display stands on which to exhibit their arresting collection of textile art. There is a café/bistro here if you are in need of refreshment and a breather.
The final city venue is on Orchard Street at Tapestri Café/Bistro, the ladies from Cutting Edge Textiles (https://cuttingedgetextiles.wordpress.com/) will be sharing their exhibition with the diners. Their colourful windmills will grace the tables and their postcards will be unlike any you have seen before
For the final venue in our Festival of Stitch, you will need transport to Mumbles; what was a fishing village, but is now a busy holiday destination on the must visit list. You could stroll along the Promenade passing plenty of places for refreshments and reach Mumbles Pier. The Beach Hut Café and the Little Stone Gallery will be hosting an exhibition from Swansea Embroiderers and Textile Group, this group rose from the ashes of The Embroiderer’s Guild – Swansea Branch, which had a long history of creative embroidery and textiles. (https://www.facebook.com/GrwpBrodwaithaBrethynAbertawe/)
Out in the courtyard, in what was Swansea’s old Police Station, students from Gower College (https://www.gcs.ac.uk/arts-crafts-and-photography#!pnl_all) will have made a textile tableau depicting their version of The Sea.
On the forecourt facing the sea you will see some very unusual deck chairs, these will be the work of local school pupils challenged to decorate the icon of the beach, the deck chair.
A group of ladies that knit so wanted to be part of the Festival that they will be yarn bombing the bollards outside the Beach Hut café, just to add more colour to our vibrant Festival of Stitch.
Our Quilt Expo on 18th and 19th August at the LC2 (Swansea Leisure Centre) will bring together over 70 + quilts from in and around Wales. This will bring an amazing exhibition of the quilting talent around us, be prepared to be astounded!
